Friends and Neighbors,

Greetings! My name is Keith Avery and I am your new Board President of Southern Colorado Equality Alliance (SCEA).  I grew up in Pueblo, lived a good part of my adult life in Colorado Springs, and my partner, Brian, and I have made Pueblo our home for many years now. As you know, SCEA is a driving force for equality for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, queer (LGBTQ) community here in Pueblo and southern Colorado. I look forward to working with our dynamic membership to provide the kind of leadership to build strong LGBTQ communities!

I am very excited about all of the activity here at SCEA. We re-organized the Board of Directors, are working to engage the membership – YOU! – in strategic planning, and invested a great deal of work in our OutFront Youth Group.  SCEA restarted the OutFront Youth Group to offer a forum where LGBTQ youth can feel supported and safe. We have successfully created a space where queer youth can meet others who are dealing with their same issues and struggles. OutFront has also grown into an ideal environment to develop young leaders in our movement.  In April, several of our youth members organized a Queer Youth Prom that attracted over 70 participants. OutFront has also applied for and received a small grant from the Chinook Fund in helping out or efforts with the LGBTQ youth of Pueblo and southern Colorado.

SCEA is also hearing from members that we need to start a LGBTQ Adult Support Group for those who come out later in life and need a place to talk about issues they are facing.  On August 21^st, we will host the annual Pueblo Pride event with local vendors, community organizations, entertainment, and information promoting awareness as well as acceptance.  With every year, the Pueblo Pride event continues to grow.
