SCEA History

On November 3, 1992, Colorado voters passed the anti-gayballot initiative "Amendment 2" with a 53% majority. The measure was spearheaded by Colorado for Family Values, a Colorado Springs-based group.

During the turmoil that followed Amendment 2's passage, several town meetings were called by community activists where it became evident that an organized Pueblo and Southern Colorado group was needed: to deal with the rising tide of antigay activities, help the community mend from the damaging results of the Amendment 2 campaign and assist in securing basic civil rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered citizens.

On November 7, 1992 the first meeting of Pueblo was held. On April 5, 1993 Pueblo After 2 was legally incorporated as a non-profit, tax exempt 501c-3 organization. Ten years later Pueblo after Two's name was changed to the Southern Colorado Equality Alliance. From its humble beginnings and through the dedication of its Board Members and volunteers, SCEA has emerged as a respected and known grassroots organization working for gay and lesbian equality. We were the first organization to be listed in the Pueblo telephone directory under Gay/Lesbian Organizations.
